What is a Debt? A Debt is something you owe. It can be in the form of money or asset. It something granted to us by a creditor which expects repayment plus an interest.
One example of this are Basic loan, in which there is an agreement to lend a principal sum and be paid in a fixed period of time, and here in the Philippines we have some loan provider such as SSS (Social Security System), Pag-Ibig Fund or HDMF (Home Development Fund, and Local Banks. They provide Personal or Salary Loan, Housing loan, and Car loan.
To some middle class and lower class families, loan providers will not be able to approve there application for loan, since they did not pass some standards in which they cannot afford to pay such loan. However they tend to go to other people to lend them some money as personal loan. The popular personal loan here in Philippine is called 5-6, this type of loan are provided by our so called “Bombay” (they are Indian nationals that are trying to make a living here in our country). 5-6 means if I lend you PHP 500 you will be paying PHP 600, in short it has a 20% interest and you can pay it in daily terms within one month depending on your agreement.
As we go through our lives, especially here in the Philippines is hard to make a living, we are sometimes forced to have some debt. And before we knew it we are sometimes buried in our debts.
One of the best ways to reduce your debt is by reducing your Monthly Expenses
There are two types of monthly expenses, first is the Fixed Expenses, This are the house mortgage or rental, and some loans. Second is the Variable Expenses, this are expenses that can be changed or eliminated entirely, such as food, clothing, entertainment, vacations, utilities, etc.
Since Variable Expenses are the ones we can easily change or eliminate, we can start reducing our variable expenses by altering your habits or doing it without.
1. Conserving electricity and water, by doing so we can reduce monthly bills in Electricity and Water.
2. Preparing a Meal from scratch, instead of buying from fast-food or prepared frozen food.
3. Watch movies at home, instead of going to the movie theaters every week.
4. Have your bonding moments in park with your family. Instead of going to malls, it is better to go to some parks. There good parks here in the Philippines.
5. Walk from home. Instead of taking a tricycle to the main road or if your work is just a couple of blocks away it is better to walk. After all walking is one the best exercise.
6. Bring food to your work, just like number 2, it is cheaper and it is much healthier if the food is cooked from home.
7. Set clothing allowance. Instead of buying new clothes every payday, why not try it every other payday.
Debts are not that easy to handle. They come in different sizes. I think the key here is planning. Plan your expenses and you will see the difference. Hope this information helps you in someway. Please feel free to share your comments and suggestions about this topic.
